About Patrick
In 2002, while he was a freshman at JMU, he created his own website to post funny pictures and stories of the different antics he and his friends partook in. He kept up with it over the summer and following school year with recaps of crazy college parties along with snarky commentary on pop culture and entertainment. Even though he considered the site a hobby, traffic to the site grew gradually through word of mouth and trading links with other college-related websites. As traffic continued to increase, he noticed more and more traffic coming to the site through search engines, especially for topical articles about recent news events. In one instance, the site ranked first for a breaking news story and garnered over 350,000 unique visitors from search engines in 24 hours. As a result of ranking at the top of the search engines for popular keywords, advertisers approached him and offered to pay him in exchange for ad space. This is the moment when he realized two things: how to make money online and just how important, powerful and valuable high rankings in the search engines played a role in accomplishing that.
During winter break of 2004, he took an internship at a local search engine marketing company where he learned how to develop and implement SEO strategies for other businesses and organizations. He knew this is what he wanted to do.
After college, he continued to run the site as a full-time job for 18 months. At its peak, the site averaged 50,000 unique visitors a day (with 30% coming from search engines) and was completely supported by advertising. Even though he was making a solid living working from his couch, he eventually got bored of doing the same thing everyday. He started to miss the daily human interaction, new challenges and structure of a “real job” and thus decided to return to the SEO company where he had previously been an intern.
Even though he was passionate about learning and providing search engine marketing services for various clients, he left his position after 6 months when the SEO company was acquired by a larger advertising agency.
In January 2007, he was introduced to a local web designer, Chris, who just so happened to be looking for some freelance help. After working part-time for a few months, Patrick accepted a full-time position as a front-end web developer. Although he took a brief hiatus from providing search marketing services for clients, he did not stop reading and learning about the latest practices and industry trends.
Eventually, some of the clients for which he had developed websites for started to inquire about SEO & SEM services, and so he began offering the search marketing services for a few businesses. As more and more companies became aware of the importance of ranking well in the search engines and were interested in the services, Patrick and Chris realized they could create a separate business focusing primarily on search marketing. As a result, Streamline Metrics was born in April 2008.
